Periodontology

The supporting tissues arround the teeth are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. There are various cases where these tissues become infected and eventually the tooth support is compromised. To date, periodontal disease is the main reason for tooth loss in adults. In order to avoid tooth loss due to periodontal disease the periodontal tissues have to be treated and the inflammation has to be rooted out. Here we have to keep in mind the huge importance of maintenance, which relies on both diligent maintenance of oral hygiene and often recal appointments to the dentist for scaling and monitoring.
